Molloy enters his second season with the Battery after signing with the club on a multi-year deal prior to the 2024 season.
Molloy, 28, has been among the USL Championship’s premier players and 2024 was no exception. The Irish midfielder garnered All-League First Team honors for the third consecutive season and was the top-rated player of the league by FotMob and Sofascore. He was also voted by his peers in the USL Player’s Association to the Championship’s 2024 Best Eleven. Molloy also earned Team of the Week honors for exceptional performances in Weeks 3, 8, 19 and 21
The midfielder featured in 32 matches across all competitions for the Battery in 2024, recording three goals and three assists. Despite missing a portion of the season due to injury, Molloy was still among the leaders on the team and the league across numerous statistical categories. Molloy led the team in chances created (73) and interceptions (50), along with 24 successful dribbles, 32 clearances, 54 tackles won and 188 duels won, in the regular season and playoffs. Among Molloy’s most memorable moments was his match-winning goal off a free kick against the Tampa Bay Rowdies in the Eastern Conference Semifinals.
Prior to Charleston, Molloy established himself as one of the top midfielders in the Championship and was an MVP finalist in 2022 in addition to All-League First Team selections in 2022 and 2023. The midfielder was Memphis’ top creative playmaker from 2022-23, registering a club-best 18 assists and 154 chances created across the regular season and playoffs in those two seasons. Molloy also scored 10 goals in that time. His 80 chances created in 2023 were the most in the league.
Molloy is the only player to make the All-League First Team in 2022, 2023 and 2024.
Molloy’s professional career began when he was drafted 16th overall in the 2020 MLS SuperDraft by Portland Timbers and later signed with Timbers 2. He competed for Forward Madison FC in USL League One in 2021 and had a breakout campaign that saw him land as a finalist for League One MVP.
Collegiately, Molloy played for Penn State University before turning pro. Molloy garnered All-America and All-Big Ten honors with the Nittany Lions and was named the conference’s midfielder of the year his senior season. He played his freshman year at Keiser University in Florida.
Molloy is a native of Dublin, Ireland, and is fluent in English and Gaelic.
