Battery advance to US Open Cup third round to face MLS’s San Jose Earthquakes

Portland, OR. The Charleston Battery defeated the Portland Timbers U23′s by a score of one goal to nil on Tuesday evening at Jeld Wen Field.  Rookie forward Austin Savage headed home the IMGP1606winner in the 60th minute to lift the Battery to victory.  The win means that Charleston will move on to face Major League Soccer’s San Jose Earthquakes in a third round game to be played next Tuesday night at Blackbaud Stadium.

Charleston enjoyed the better of the first half and came close to scoring from a number of chances.  Jose Cuevas was denied by the woodwork in the 17th minute with a curling right-footed shot from twenty yards.

Ten minutes later forward Dane Kelly came close after being played through by Nicki Paterson.  Kelly accelerated to meet the pass but his shot was blocked away by Portland goalkeeper David Meves.

The breakthrough came on the hour mark after some good build-up play that saw Jarad van Schaik slip a pass out to Cuevas on the left side.  Cuevas sent a cross into the back of the box and Savage got past his defender and cushioned the header home.

Portland exerted more pressure in the late stages as they looked for a way back into the game but the Battery defense held fast as Charleston closed out the game.

The Battery will return to USL PRO play this Saturday, May 25th as they host the Rochester Rhinos at Blackbaud Stadium.

goal to nil Sunday in an inter-league match at BBVA Stadium. Dane Kelly volleyed home the winner in the 35th minute to earn Charleston its sixth win of the season.

With the win the Battery (6-2-0) moves back into second position in the USL PRO standings.

The Battery enjoyed the better of the first half and created a number of good chances.  Defender Taylor Mueller came close in the 4th minute but his header from a Nicki Paterson corner rose over the crossbar.

Paterson was involved again in the 25th minute as Jose Cuevas picked out his run with a weighted pass down the right side.  Paterson allowed the ball to come across his body but his right-footed volley looped over the bar.

Minute’s later defender Colin Falvey picked out Cuevas with another long pass that carried beyond the Houston defense.  Cuevas controlled the ball onto his left foot but his attempt from just inside the box curled wide.

The breakthrough came from a free-kick ten minutes before half time as Cuevas played the ball quickly down the line catching Houston by surprise. Defender Emmanuel Adjetey lifted a cross to the back of the box for Kelly who cushioned home his volley into the far corner of the goal.

The Battery continued to create chances after the break but as the game wore on the Dynamo reserves pressure began to tell.  Forward Brian Ching almost scored in the 82nd minute meeting a corner at the penalty-spot but his header flew wide.

With time running out Houston defender Christian Gonzalez tried his luck from 20 yards but his drilled strike was tipped around the post by Battery goalkeeper Odisnel Cooper.

Next up for the Battery is a second round US Open Cup game versus the Portland Timbers U23′s on Tuesday night in Portland, OR (10:30 p.m. EST / Sports radio 1450 AM).

Battery win streak halted by Charlotte Eagles

Charlotte, NC. The Charleston Battery lost to the Charlotte Eagles by a score of one goal to nil vs. charlotteTuesday night at Queens University Stadium. The Battery entered the game on the back of a five game win streak but could not answer a second half free-kick goal from Charlotte defender Shaun Francis.

“It’s a disappointing result as we defended very well for ninety minutes but unfortunately gave up a set piece at the top of the box that they buried”, said head coach Mike Anhaeuser. “We’ll re-group and work to start another winning streak as we did after the Richmond game.”

The loss was the Battery’s first since the April 13th opener in Richmond but Charleston (5-2-0) remains in second position in the USL PRO standings.

The win extends Charlotte’s unbeaten start to the season. the Eagles improve to (3-0-3) and move up into a tie for the sixth spot.

Charlotte created the first chance of the game in the 10th minute from a corner-kick that was rolled short. The ball was then crossed to the edge of the six yard box but Christian Martinez’s first time shot flew over the bar.

Charleston’s best chance of the half came to midfielder Emmanuel Adjetey in the 18th minute after Charlotte cleared the ball from inside the box. Adjetey attempted a first-time volley but saw his effort slam into the side-netting.

Neither side managed to carve out any more clear cut chances until just after the hour mark when the Battery conceded a free-kick at the edge of the penalty-area. Francis took the kick and curled his shot around the Charleston defensive wall and into the right side of goalkeeper Odisnel Cooper’s goal.

The Battery responded with a flurry of attacking substitutions that saw forwards Dane Kelly and Heviel Cordoves both introduced. Charleston pressed forward looking for an equalizer and almost found it in the 82nd minute as Emmanuel Adjetey picked out Dane Kelly in the box. Kelly managed to get past his defender but blasted his shot over the bar.

In the 87th minute the Battery threatened again with Cordoves running through on the left side. Cordoves controlled the ball as he entered the box but his left footed strike was smothered by goalkeeper Eric Reed.

The Battery heads to Houston, TX on Sunday for a 11 AM match versus MLS’s Houston Dynamo reserves (Sports Radio 1450 AM).

Battery beats Hammerheads to win fifth straight

Charleston, SC.  The Charleston Battery defeated the Wilmington Hammerheads by a score of four 051113 Kellygoals to two Saturday night at Blackbaud Stadium in front of 3,699.  Charleston jumped out to a four goal lead in the first half but had to fight off a Wilmington come-back after the break in a heated second 45 minutes that saw a player from each team red-carded.

The win lifts the Battery (5-1-0) into second position in the USL PRO standings.

The Battery got off to a flying start with goal in only the second minute after Nicki Paterson played a clever ball over the top for Dane Kelly to chase.  Kelly shrugged off the challenge of Wilmington defender Gareth Evans and finished neatly into the right side of the goal.

Ten minutes later Charleston doubled its advantage as Nicki Paterson beat the off-side trap with a deep run from midfield.  Paterson controlled the ball with a quick touch and then drilled home a shot past Wilmington goalkeeper Phil Tuttle.

Wilmington conceded a third goal on the 21 minute mark as the Battery continued to attack with purpose.  After a spell of pressure the ball ran loose at the top of the penalty-area and midfielder Zach Prince clipped a curling right-footed shot around Tuttle and into the far corner.

Charleston added a fourth goal nine minutes later with a good individual effort from defender John Wilson.  Wilson dribbled forward on the left side and then cut past his defender onto his right foot before putting a perfectly placed shot into the right corner of the goal.

The Hammerheads fought back after half time and Paul Nicholson scored two goals in quick succession in the 53rd and 59th minute.  With Wilmington in the ascendency the game changed as both teams had players sent off.  The Battery’s Cody Ellison was shown a red card for his part in a scuffle at the edge of the penalty-area and then minutes later Gareth Evans was ejected after tangling with Dane Kelly.

The ejections took the steam out of the Hammerheads attack and Charleston was able to see the remainder of the game through for the victory.

The Battery heads to Charlotte, NC on Tuesday night for a 7 PM match versus the Charlotte Eagles (Sports Radio 1450 AM).
